The short version: what "lifetime limited" really means
All three major asphalt shingle brands (IKO, CertainTeed, GAF) advertise "lifetime limited" warranties on their architectural and premium lines. The word "lifetime" is marketing. Every one of these warranties is limited in three important ways:
- Non-prorated period is the first 5-10 years when you get 100% replacement value. After that, coverage prorates down, usually reaching 20-40% of original value for the remainder.
- Lifetime means as long as you own the home. One transfer is typically allowed to the next owner, but it is prorated and often requires formal notification within 60 days of sale.
- "Limited" means material defects only. Not labor (usually), not workmanship, not storm damage, not wear and tear.
If you hear "lifetime warranty" and think "the manufacturer replaces my roof in year 25 for free," that is not how it works. Understanding this before you pick a brand saves disappointment later.
Side-by-side comparison of the three majors
Here is the honest read on the top-tier warranty from each brand, based on their 2025-2026 published warranty documents. Always verify the current version with the manufacturer before you buy.
| Warranty term | IKO Cambridge / Dynasty | CertainTeed Landmark | GAF Timberline HDZ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base warranty | Limited lifetime | Limited lifetime | Limited lifetime |
| Non-prorated period (base) | 10 years | 10 years | 10 years |
| Base wind coverage | 110 mph | 110 mph | 130 mph (HDZ with LayerLock) |
| Upgraded wind coverage | 130 mph with 4 nails + starter + cap | 130 mph with SureStart PLUS | 130 mph included (HDZ) |
| Algae resistance warranty | 15 years (on AR models) | 10-15 years (StreakFighter) | 10-25 years (StainGuard Plus) |
| Transferability | One transfer, prorated | One transfer, prorated | One transfer, prorated |
| Premium tier (certified contractor) | iko ROOFPRO Premium Protection | SureStart PLUS via SELECT ShingleMaster | Golden Pledge (via Master Elite) |
| Premium non-prorated period | Up to 30 years | Up to 50 years | Up to 50 years |
| Workmanship coverage (premium tier) | Yes, limited | Yes, 25 years | Yes, 25 years |
The key insight is that all three base warranties are basically the same. Where they differ meaningfully is at the premium tier, which you only unlock by using a factory-certified contractor. That is not a sales pitch, it is how these warranties are structured.
Why the certified installer tier matters
This is the part most homeowners do not understand. The standard warranty that every GAF, IKO, or CertainTeed shingle comes with (when installed by any licensed roofer) covers material defects for a prorated lifetime, with 10 years non-prorated. That is the "base" warranty and it is fine, but it has two holes: no workmanship coverage, and the non-prorated period is short.
The upgraded warranty tiers (GAF Golden Pledge, CertainTeed SureStart PLUS, IKO ROOFPRO Premium) add:
- 50-year non-prorated material coverage (vs 10 years)
- 25 years of workmanship coverage (the factory warrants the installation, not just the product)
- Coverage for tear-off and disposal if a replacement is needed
- Coverage for misapplication
You only get these if a factory-certified contractor installs the roof and registers the warranty with the manufacturer within the required window (usually 30 days). If your contractor is not certified, the best warranty on earth is unavailable to you.
Jerry's Roofing installs all three brands and works with each manufacturer's certification programs on request. When a homeowner wants the Golden Pledge or SureStart PLUS, we register the roof properly so the warranty is real and enforceable.
What is NOT covered by any shingle warranty
Every major manufacturer has a similar list of exclusions. Read it before you rely on the warranty.
- Improper installation. If the shingles were not nailed per spec, the warranty is void. This is the single most common warranty denial reason.
- Inadequate attic ventilation. All three brands require specific ventilation per square footage. Insufficient ventilation voids the warranty.
- Storm damage. Hail, hurricane wind, tornado, and tree impact are insurance claims, not warranty claims.
- Foot traffic damage. Damage from people walking on the roof.
- Chemical exposure. Industrial fallout, pollution, or chemical cleaners.
- Natural weathering. Normal color variation, fading from UV, and granule loss within expected bounds.
- Pre-existing problems. Damage on the underlying structure or decking.
- Failure to register. Many premium warranties require registration within 30 days. Miss the window and you drop to the base warranty automatically.
What voids a shingle warranty in Texas (the specifics)
Texas has two climate realities that make warranty compliance especially important:
Ventilation
The standard NRCA ventilation requirement is 1 square foot of net-free vent area per 150 square feet of attic floor, split between intake and exhaust. All three brands require this or stricter. Katy attics with blocked soffits or undersized ridge vents fail this requirement, and any warranty claim on a ventilation-compromised roof gets denied.
Nailing pattern
IKO, CertainTeed, and GAF all specify 4-nail patterns for standard wind coverage and 6-nail patterns for high-wind upgrade. Nail placement, nail depth, and nail type (galvanized coil roofing nails, not staples or drywall nails) are all specified. An installer who uses the wrong pattern or over/under-drives nails has voided the warranty before the shingle touches the deck.
Starter strip and ridge cap
High-wind warranty upgrades (130 mph) require manufacturer-matched starter strips at eaves and rakes, and manufacturer-matched ridge cap shingles. Cutting 3-tab shingles to use as starters (a common corner cut) voids the high-wind warranty. The starter and cap must match the brand.
Real talk: which warranty is "best"?
Here is the honest answer after looking at all three closely and installing all three in Katy:
- GAF Timberline HDZ gives the strongest base wind coverage right out of the gate (130 mph with LayerLock installed per spec and 4 nails). For Katy's hurricane exposure, that matters. GAF also has the widest contractor network and the Golden Pledge is a strong premium warranty.
- CertainTeed Landmark has the longest non-prorated period at the premium tier (50 years) and the SureStart PLUS upgrade is well-regarded. Landmark is the go-to for homeowners who want premium-tier protection.
- IKO Cambridge and Dynasty are priced competitively and the Dynasty line with ArmourZone has genuinely good wind performance. IKO has fewer certified contractors than GAF, which matters for premium-tier eligibility.
The truth is that the installer matters more than the brand. A perfectly installed IKO Cambridge will outlast a poorly installed GAF HDZ. All three brands make good products. Pick based on your contractor's certification, what you like aesthetically, and price.
Questions to ask before signing
- Are you factory certified by this manufacturer? What level?
- Will the premium warranty tier be registered on my roof? Show me the registration.
- What nailing pattern are you using? Is it to high-wind spec?
- What starter strip and ridge cap are you using? Are they manufacturer-matched?
- Is my attic ventilation to code for this warranty? Will you verify it?
- What is your workmanship warranty, separate from the manufacturer's?
- What happens if the warranty is denied because of installation?
Any contractor who cannot answer these is probably not going to register the warranty correctly, and the warranty you think you have is not the one you actually have.
FAQ
Is "lifetime warranty" really lifetime?
Not in the way people think. "Lifetime" means as long as the original homeowner owns the home, with one transfer allowed to the next owner. The non-prorated period (when you get 100% coverage) is typically 10 years on base warranties and up to 50 years on certified-contractor premium warranties.
What is the difference between manufacturer warranty and workmanship warranty?
Manufacturer warranty covers defects in the shingles themselves. Workmanship warranty covers installation errors and is separate. Most roofers offer 2-10 year workmanship warranties, and premium manufacturer programs extend that to 25 years when a certified contractor installs.
Does hail or hurricane damage trigger the warranty?
No. Storm damage is an insurance claim, not a warranty claim. File with your homeowners insurance or a windstorm policy. Our insurance claim guide walks through the process.
Can I transfer my warranty if I sell the house?
Yes, once. All three major brands allow a single transfer to the next owner, usually within 30-60 days of closing, and usually with prorated coverage from that point forward. After the first transfer the warranty typically ends.
What happens if my installer goes out of business?
The manufacturer warranty still applies because it is between you and the manufacturer. The workmanship warranty from the installer is gone. This is why choosing a local, established roofer matters. Jerry's Roofing is local to Katy and we are not going anywhere.
